A bursa is a cushion like structure present at most bony prominences in the body. This protects the hard bone and its overlying soft tissues from in any impact or traumatic injury.
In runners, cyclists and athletes, the bursa over the trochantric region gets inflamed and becomes a source of pain with every movement. This is called Greater trochantric pain syndrome (GTPS). In cases where the situation is acute, conservative management works wonders. In chronic cases, the pain might take longer to settle down. Restriction of activity is a must in these cases with a tailored rehabilitation programe.
