This modality of treatment makes use of electric currents of very low amplitude and short frequency to stimulate cutenous(sensory) nerves of the affected area. This leads to relief of pain by release of some chemical mediators and other complex mechanisms. Most patients with acute pain benefit from TENS more than the patients suffering from chronic pain.
The Low amplitude current momentarily activates the skin receptors and makes them insensitive to pain after a burst of shots. Most mordern equipments offer a standard pulsed therapy for pain relief.
Relief of pain is temporary and beneficial to improve the compliance of the patient towards exercise. When the pain is able to alter the basic altered biomechanics of the problem with rehabilitation, electrotherapy has a very limited role.
